An emblematic, internationally reputable scientist of Hungarian soil science, soil mapping and soil classification, a regular member of the MTA, emeritus professor at Szent István University and perpetual president of the Hungarian Soil Science Society, Pál Stefanovits was born 100 years ago.

As Stefanovits' oeuvre appears almost everywhere in the lives of soil science professionals, educators and researchers (embracing several generations) through his mapping, research and teaching activities, the Hungarian Soil Science Society together with the ATK Institute of Soil Sciences, wants to honour this eminent scientist by setting up a plaque. The memorial plaque was scheduled to be inaugurated on the professor's birthday on November 24, 2020, in front of his former apartment building, Budapest, 9 Frankel Leó Street. In view of the legislation and epidemiological measures in force, the inauguration of the plaque has been delayed, but hopefully we can hold the ceremony as soon as possible next year! In honour of Professor, the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, Szent István University and the Hungarian Soil Science Society established the Pál Stefanovits Memorial Prize.
